Ireland’s Slow Riot are releasing their new double A-side single, ‘Voyeur/Burn in the City’, via Straight Lines Are Fine on February 2nd. The tracks are the first new material from the band since last year’s ‘Pink December’. Much has happened in the interim; the band expanding to a four-piece after the addition of second guitarist Liam O’Connor (formerly of Fonda), an intense period of songwriting, honing their live craft via numerous festival appearances (notably Electric Picnic, Other Voices), and the recording of a debut album which will be released later in 2018. ‘Voyeur and Burn in the City’ showcase their new approach and provide a tantalizing glimpse of what is to come with their debut full length release.

‘Voyeur’ and ‘Burn In The City’ demonstrate the breadth and depth of the band’s new found songwriting arsenal. The former a visceral alternative rock track, fusing dense yet well balanced production with catchy melodies and driving rhythms; it’s an unstoppable force.

“Liam came to us with the chord progressions and guitar melody of ‘Voyeur’. I liked the contrast between the spectral, somewhat eerie verse parts and the melodic, hopeful chorus”, says vocalist/bassist Niall Clancy. “Lyrically I wanted to convey this disparity between hope and desperation and found a similarity in, what can be, the voyeuristic nature of romance today.”

‘Burn In The City’ employs dreamy guitars, sweeping synths and a reverberant, spacious mix. The track is hard hitting yet sentimental, animated yet brooding, recalling acts such as Eagulls, Preoccupations and Merchandise in its new-wave dance beats with dark, soaring undertones.

Fresh out of the studio, the ‘Voyeur/Burn in the City’ single was recorded with longtime collaborator Kevin Vanbergen (The Pixies, The Maccabees, Dinosaur Pile-Up, The La’s and Biffy Clyro) at Savage Sound Studios, Hastings at the beginning of 2018. Vanbergen has been a catalyst for the band’s creativity since hooking up with them for the recording of their debut Cathedral EP. Their working relationship continues to thrive, with production of the new material pushing the band into richer sonic territory.

The band have collaborated with up and coming Irish artist Darragh Dempsey for the artwork and videos for ‘Voyeur/Burn In The City’. Recognised by the art world world as a rising talent, Dempsey’s ‘Flesh’ painting was inspired by Francis Bacon’s ‘Study after Velazquez’s Portrait of Pope Innocent X’; the anguish and surrealism of the image echoing the themes of the band’s new music.

Slow Riot emerge from their hometown of Limerick backed with support from the likes of The Irish Times, Nialler9, Other Voices, Electric Picnic, Today FM and Whelan’s One’s to Watch; their plaudits building at an impressive rate. They’re flying the flag for a new breed of Irish acts ready for the global stage.

They have also amassed a rich profile of support this side of the Irish Sea, with the likes of Drowned In Sound, Q Magazine, The Line Of Best Fit, Clash and Gigwise amongst many others citing them for big things. Previous single ‘Trophy Wife’ earned the band plaudits from Shaun Keaveny on the 6Music Breakfast Show, Radio X, Absolute and was a mainstay on the band’s native Today FM with DJ Paul McLoone declaring Slow Riot to be “my new favourite Irish band”.

Slow Riot returns to the UK in April to headline Communion’s club night in London plus regional dates, but not before they play their first headline Dublin show at Whelan’s on March 22nd. Summer festival dates will be announced very soon.

Finally, CARRON are the cherry on top! They’re an indie-folk duo from Dublin, led by the sisters Meabh and Mella Carron. These siblings are unique in their style of singing and songwriting, attempting to capture far more than just melody or rhyme. Through the frequent use of unison vocals, they create a sense of one shared voice between them reinforced by a strong familial bond, while singing in harmony highlights their differences. Their EP ‘Roots’ was released last year, and they’re working on a brand new LP for release imminently.

So there you have it. Brilliant brand new music in the comfy surrounds of our Vintage Room, the second Tuesday of every month. Did we mention it’s FREE?

James Vincent McMorrow has released the third music video from his latest album ‘We Move’ for the song “One Thousand Times.” The video was directed by Bob Gallagher [www.bobfilmsthings.com] and McMorrow said in a statement, “I hate being in my own videos. I said to Bob that if we were going to make a performance video then something had to happen in it to elevate it into more interesting territory, that it had to have a point that was more than just ‘guy on stage plays music’. So we gave it a point…. Bob can articulate it better than I can.” Gallagher is an award-winning director based in Dublin and has directed videos for Girl Band and Floor Staff among others. He describes the concept for this video in a statement below:

“When the dictator enters James and the band become prisoners within their own performance, and the complacent audience who try to ignore the malicious presence in the theatre gradually come under attack. No one stands up for anyone else so eventually everybody becomes a victim of the regime. At the end you have a reversal where James’ and the dictator become locked in an exchange where James uses the stage to acknowledge him directly. He sort of pleads with the dictator and you get the sense that he might have made some small impact on him. The video is obviously an exaggerated surreal scenario, with no intention to trivialize complex political issues, but we’ve reached a point where fact and reason aren’t the powerful mind changing tools they should be. We don’t have the middle ground of debate so much as we have streams of diametrically opposed opinions flying back and forth. I think that art can be the middle ground or abstract space where these subjects can be humanized and discussed, and where perceptions can potentially be changed. That may be optimistic but you’d hope that at some point the dictator realizes why he’s the only one clapping.”  – Bob Gallagher

Additionally, McMorrow has announced a Dublin show at Trinity College on Friday July 7th, and is one of the ten shortlisted acts for the RTE Choice Album of the Year, for We Move, and the Song of the Year shortlist for Rising Water. The winners will be announced at the event in Vicar Street on Thursday March 9th.

THE FLAWS

The Flaws exploded onto the Irish music scene in late 2007 when their debut long player ‘Achieving Vagueness’ was released to universal critical acclaim. It entered the Irish Top 20 and lead to both Choice and Meteor nominations. Having toured the debut for over 18 months playing some amazing shows across the country including sets at Glastonbury, Electric Picnic ’08 and Oxegen the band took a well deserved break.

In October 2010 the band released their second album ‘Constant Adventure’ to critical acclaim and with the departure of original bass player Dane McMahon
in early 2012 the band were forced into a transitional phase. With Paul Mallon picking up bass duties the band continued to perform playing particularly memorable shows in Whelan’s and The Academy in support of their one off single ‘Let’s Fight’. Unsure what to do next the band decided to take an open ended break. The band reconvened in early 2013 and began to exchange ideas. Unbeknownst to all
parties, this was to evolve into the initial phase in the writing process of their third album ‘Springtime For The Flaws’.

Combining the drive and urgency of Achieving Vagueness with the melodic sensibilities of Constant Adventure it became clear to the band that this was their best work to date. Taking matters into their own hands The Flaws decided to
record the album themselves giving themselves a creative freedom to fully express themselves without any outside interference. The results speak for themselves. Lead single, the anthemic ‘Animals’ is a prime example of the band at their most potent. Under an exterior made from solid muscle all the hallmarks of the band’s sound are there. With Colin Berrill’s relentless drum attack, Paul Mallon’s pulsing bass, the soaring harmonies, and the sumptuous melodic interplay between Paul Finn and Shane Malone’s, the bands drive is evident. Mixing duties were handled by the world renowned Marc Carloan.

The following up single ‘Thats What You Get’ is another slice of The Flaws trademark gloompop with a dash of self-deprecation for good measure. With the album due in late March 2015 and a renewed sense of purpose, this promises to be the most exciting phase of The Flaws thus far.
